The Apprentice 2017: Week 3 - "Robots"

As always, members of Graphene and Vitality will be highlighted in their respective colours, as will Karren/Claude and LAS. Points for each section will be listed, as well as an overall tally at the end with the roll call. If anyone could also tell me who does make the 'spirit of Jeff' joke, would be greatly appreciated.

Dawn Awakening & Task Briefing:

·         5.45am and Charles (without glasses?!) answers the phone (50 points to him)

·         Anisa setting up the one girl moving over to the boys’ team, and Michaela reckons she’d be willing to move over if she was made PM, let’s see what happens shall we? (Exactly that, and as Michaela was made PM by LAS, she won’t score any points as she didn’t volunteer, she gets the colour change for moving teams)

·         They meet at the British Design Museum and are told that they need to create/sell both a toy robot and a prototype robot

·         Joanne still cannot wear her coat properly, and Anisa/Charles/Sarah/Michaela lose points on Scarf Wars (so that’s 30 points lost for Joanna as it’s a 2nd offence, and 20 points deducted from Anisa and Michaela (again, 2nd offence), whilst Charles and Sarah lose 10 points each)

·         +40 Charles, -10 Sarah, -20 Anisa and Michaela, -30 Joanna

Initial Planning:

·         Loved the robot doing Gangnam Style (‘spirit of Jeff’, nice one; but I cannot award points for it as I can’t tell who said it and they don’t show who it is, I figure it must be Ross, Charles or Harrison and my personal guess would be Ross as he seems a bit of a joker.)

·         Jade and Anisa go up for PM, Liz backs Jade and so Jade gets it (Jade gets 40 points for being made PM, Anisa gets 20 for volunteering)

·         James wants to go for over 60s, Sajan talks about the difficulty of training them, Michaela agrees with over 60s as still caters to younger market (Sajan didn’t get his way so 10 points lost there)

·         Jade/Joanna/Anisa/Bushra on prototype team, Sarah made sub-team leader (henceforth known as STL for short). ‘Turn a negative into a positive’ says Jade (Sarah gets 15 points for being made STL)

·         James/Andrew/Ross/Harrison on prototype team, Harrison made sub-team leader (Harrison gets 15 points for being made STL)

·         Siobhan throwing more shade at Liz and telling her to not ‘get too emotional’ – well don’t start on her as soon as you get in the car then! (Liz loses 15 points for being criticised)

·         Andrew wants a recipe bot, Ross wants a yoga bot, James tries to demonstrate yoga (he’s a crab!) (James gains 20 points for somewhat being able to do a yoga pose)

·         Jade wants her bot to be an educational aid for children. Bushra wants Anisa to use a younger voice, and Joanna agrees, Jade talks over her and keeps asking her to slow down (she couldn’t get much slower).  (Anisa loses 30 points)

·         Liz asks on cost price for a flying robot, whilst Michaela likes the construction bot, Liz asks more technical questions; Siobhan criticises her again but they choose to go for a balance bot. Michaela’s team also want the balance bot with Sajan doing his best to sweet-talk her and it works as the vendor chooses them due to their enthusiasm. Sarah blames them not getting the bot on the tension between Liz and Siobhan, they go for the flying bot as their 2nd choice. (Liz loses 15 points for Siobhan’s criticism, whilst Sajan gets 35 points for charming the vendor)

·         Harrison’s sub-team go with ‘Jeffrii’ as their prototype robot name (‘Helping Hand for Life’ as their tagline), Anisa bombards hers with ideas and Jade asks her to shut up for 2 seconds and think, Bushra comes up with E-Bot which they all like. (all unscored here as E-Bot is an awful name and Anisa was at least coming up with suggestions)

·         Michaela has misgivings on the name, but Harrison is sold and the other guys seem to back him.

·         Michaela changes the name to ‘Siimon’ (no difference!), Charles and Elliott try to remind Michaela of the deadline for the sign board, but she and Sajan cause them to miss the deadline and the board is only half-finished. (Charles and Elliott gain 20 points each, whilst Michaela and Sajan lose 20 points for the deadline, and Michaela loses a further 30 for changing the name for no reason).

·         +40 Jade, +20 James/Charles/Elliott, +15 Sarah and Harrison, +5 Sajan, -10 Anisa, -30 Liz, -50 Michaela

Next Day:

·         Liz and Joanna get swapped; Sarah tries to explain the tension to Jade but Siobhan talks over her. Sarah Jayne backs Liz and shuts up speaking whenever Siobhan tries to interrupt – good girl! (Sarah Jayne gains 60 points for this)

·         Michaela squirming when explaining to Harrison about the sign board; James points out a grammar mistake on the board. Michaela swaps Andrew and Elliott over. (James gains 30 points for being a grammar pedant)

·         Michaela opts to do the demo and Sajan the pitch initially. Elliott tells Harrison about how Michaela and Sajan missed the deadline.

·         Bushra does a demo at a department store whilst reading off a script, the robot goes rogue and Jade tries to save it but falters, Bushra and Anisa do their best to get back on track but both talk over Jade – criticism: what is primary function? (Learning and fun). Elizabeth asked on units (she chose a random number), Karren reckons she’ll be surprised if they get any orders (they’ll probably end up getting a landslide win). (All lose 50 points)

·         Siobhan ends up arguing with the rest of the team, Sarah Jayne said she has had enough (so would I love) (Siobhan loses 45 points for a team argument, and Sarah Jayne gains 30)

·         James markets Siimon as a companion for lonely older people as well as maintaining healthiness. Ross does a little demo with a good script, Elliott offers a little fictional anecdote. £490 trade price, £735 as a mark-up (Harrison); retailer asks on incomplete board and different name, Ross does well in trying to save it but Claude reckons it was an awful pitch (better than the girls Claude). (Ross gains 70 points whilst the rest will be unscored)

·         Ross and Harrison are not happy with the product, they give Michaela their feedback, Michaela tries to blame Elliott, but Harrison backs him and they choose to not take the board in future. (Elliott won’t lose points for Michaela’s criticism as Harrison backed him)

·         Girls @ Maplin: asked how the robot would sell itself, Liz gave a good answer on it having a demo bot in store (Liz gains 35 points)

·         Sub-team Girls: pretty much told ‘no’ immediately; Joanna tells Siobhan that she did well but Siobhan snaps back ‘without any help’; Sarah and Sarah Jayne both criticise Siobhan but Joanna tries to get them back. Karren reckons their tension is causing them to lose. (Siobhan loses 45 points for a team argument, Joanna gains 25 for trying to keep the peace)

·         Michaela at retailers: £43 per piece (courtesy of Andrew), £45 per piece (courtesy of Michaela), £30 per piece plus one for free (Michaela again). Claude impressed with Michaela and the team as a whole (whole sub-team here gains 50 points –Andrew/Michaela/Charles/Sajan). Andrew tells them that as they still have time, they need to go back out there and start selling more.

·         Harrison at electronics giant: Ross does a demo, asked on mark-up; James says most bots are geared towards kids and not at over 60s (doesn’t really answer a question) (James therefore loses 90 points for behaving like a politician – I know Jeff lost 300 for this last week but that was at the end of the ep whereas we’re not in the boardroom yet)

·         Sarah tries to decide where to go next, but Siobhan talks back and accuses her of playing games, Sarah ‘I’m sure you’re fantastic to work with, a real joy’ (Sarah gains 40 points for sarcasm)

·         Sarah at retailers: £30 per piece plus 2 free

·         Prototype team sales: Karren nearly gets hit by the flying bot (85 points to the girls team – Joanna/Siobhan/Sarah/Sarah Jayne). Michaela’s half get £40.50 per piece (Sajan), and sub-team miss the 7pm deadline (30 points lost for this team –Ross/Elliott/Harrison/James)

·         Sarah says if they lose on toy sales, Siobhan will be in the BR. (no points gained as stating the obvious)

·         +175 Sarah Jayne, +125 Sarah, +110 Joanna, +40 Ross, +50 Andrew/Michaela/Charles/Sajan, -5 Siobhan, -15 Liz, -30 Elliott and Harrison, -50 Bushra/Anisa/Jade, -90 James

Initial Boardroom:

·         Stop pronouncing ‘robots’ as ‘robuts’ LAS!

·         Nice joke from LAS about losing the ‘Jeffrii’ last week and hoping the robot dances better than him.

·         Michaela asked about changing the name without telling the team, LAS reckons they should have just said ‘misunderstanding on the name, sorry’, sold out on toy robots

·         Jade says she’s hands on in terms of branding, Karren criticises for the robot talking over Jade and them all talking over each other. Siobhan asked about rowing, Sarah Jayne tries to tell LAS how she and Sarah were criticised by Siobhan for not speaking during her pitch (when she'd asked them not to!). Told they as a team need to sort themselves out (whole team lose 45 points)

·         Toy Sales: Vitality – £5785.60, Graphene – £1477.55

·         Prototype orders: Graphene – 50 for department and 100 elsewhere gives a total of £57827.55, Vitality – 0 orders whatsoever

·         Treat is having some robot combat (Kan-Opener from Robot Wars) and girls want to stop the fighting. Jade a bit smug ‘I’ve forgotten what it feels like to lose’ (she loses 100 points for this – no one likes a bragger)

·         Elliott reckons Harrison was weakest link (wrong show my dear), indecisive and not a good sub-team leader (Harrison loses 15 points, but Elliott also loses 15 for the use of ‘weakest link’)

·         Harrison blames Elliott for sitting on the fence (Elliott loses 15 points, but Harrison also loses 15 as ‘sitting on the fence’ is as bad a cliché as ‘thrown under the bus’)

·         Charles blames Sajan and Michaela for missing the deadline on the idea board (Sajan and Michaela lose 15 points)

·         -15 Michaela and Sajan, -30 Harrison and Elliott,-45 Anisa/Bushra/Joanna/Liz/Sarah/Sarah Jayne/Siobhan,-145 Jade

Losing Team BR:

·         LAS criticises them on the functionality, Ross tries to defend; LAS seems to want the bot to be a version of Alexa.

·         Sajan says their sub-team all decided to change the name, James comments that he can’t even read the board from where he is. Elliott blames Sajan and Michaela for the board and time-wasting, Sajan tries to interrupt and Michaela wants Elliott to own what he did.  (all 3 will lose 15 points). Charles brings up that Michaela did the logo only 35 seconds before the deadline. (Michaela loses another 15 points) Harrison asks Charles and Elliott what they did (Charles and Elliott lose 15 points). Michaela accuses Elliott of not wanting to tell them about mistakes. Harrison/Andrew/Michaela all argue with Elliott for taking credit for the sales when he didn’t finalise them (Elliott loses 60 points – 15 for Michaela’s initial criticism and another 45 for a team argument). LAS says would probably blame sub-team leader (Harrison loses 30 points), Harrison asks Elliott again what he did (15 points lost for Elliott)

·         Michaela chooses to bring back Harrison and Elliott, LAS not impressed with any of them. (Harrison and Elliott loses 60 points for being brought back , entire team (excluding Harrison and Elliott) lose 30 points for LAS’ criticism)

·         -30 Michaela/Andrew/James/Ross, -45 Sajan/Charles, -90 Harrison, -165 Elliott

Final 3 BR:

·         Elliott: playing it a bit slippery (LAS), strange for a barrister to not have charisma (Claude)

·         Harrison: trying to convince us did everything correctly (Karren)

·         Michaela: why didn’t she recognise where the money is? (LAS) Claude defends her for making good sales.

·         LAS criticises Michaela for not spotting in the beginning that it was about turnover, Michaela admits that she’s not confident and LAS tells her to not be intimidated in the boardroom (60 points lost as 2 criticisms and criticism from LAS counts for double what it would from another candidate)

·         Harrison repeatedly criticised by Karren for not selling anything, Harrison reckons the board was a big part of it but LAS says nothing to do with it. (Harrison loses 20 points for the criticism from Karren, and 30 for LAS disagreeing about the board).

·         Elliott asked again what he has actually done, he reckons he chose the product but Michaela wants to know if he was on a different task. He reckons Sajan should be in the boardroom, Harrison and Michaela both criticise him for lack of contribution (loss of 30 points as was asked what he’s done for the 3rd time, makes a good point about Sajan being in the boardroom so he’ll gain back 10, but loses a further 30 for the criticism from Harrison and Michaela)

·         Suicide that Michaela didn’t go for the money, logical thinking computer would say Harrison was responsible, Elliott sat back and let everyone else fall on their sword. Michaela told shouldn’t have changed the name when it was already programmed, but Elliott’s demeanour and manner not up LAS’ alley and he is fired.

·         Michaela told needs to speak up more and follow the money

·         Elliott car: I’m a salesman/negotiator/natural-born leader. Sajan reckons Elliott is gone but Bushra says he has a fighting chance (Bushra hereby loses 20 points for not having a bloody clue)

·         Michaela ‘worst experience of my life and I’ve given birth’ (she’ll lose 15 for the ‘giving birth’ part).

·         -20 Bushra, -50 Harrison and Elliott, -75 Michaela

My Thoughts on Strategy and the Boardroom:

·         I’m still wondering how the girls won – their initial pitch was a shambles and yet they still got orders, whereas Vitality’s was a lot smoother, they had an answer for everything and yet they got no orders whatsoever? I’m sorry but I’m calling Schwachsinn here.

·         I do kind of agree with Elliott that Sajan should have been in final 3 BR, but then who would he have replaced? For me, I don’t think Harrison should have been brought back, he didn’t cock up anything but it seems like the sub-team leader always has to be one of the final 3 according to LAS (for what it’s worth, I don’t feel James should have been brought back last week either).

·         Correct firing in the end, Elliott is quick to deflect blame onto other people but cannot defend himself to save his own life (he did scrub up well on You’re Fired though…). And funnily enough Elliot said exactly this on YF just.
